What is Autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has patterns of differences or difficulties in social communication, repetitive behaviour, language development, routines, interests, and sensory processing.
Autism is a different way of thinking and experiencing the world. Many people with autism possess unique strengths, such as deep focus, strong attention to detail, or creative problem-solving.
The range of traits and skills linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is referred to as the autism spectrum. It highlights the diversity of people with autism. Some require a lot of help, while others are very self-sufficient. All autistic people have different strengths, challenges and abilities.
All people on the spectrum are different! No two people with autism are the same, since autism is a spectrum disorder. While some people may be nonverbal and need help with everyday tasks, others may be more independent and have different ways of communicating with others.
How To Support Those With Autism
Acknowledge differences and uniqueness by understanding their strengths, communication, and interests.
Maintain sensory-friendly spaces by removing stimuli such as loud noises, crowded spaces, and bright lights.
Communication is key; all behaviour is communication, so pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues.
Build independence by allowing them to express their needs and honouring their choices.
Advocate inclusivity by maintaining environments where everyone, regardless of ability, is included, not judged, and celebrated.
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy is based on the science of behaviour change and learning. ABA uses principles of learning, like positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement, to teach new skills and reduce challenging behaviours.
There are many benefits to ABA therapy, as it is used to create individualized learning and treatment plans for individuals with specific learning needs. ABA is a widely recognized and effective therapy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities.
The benefits of ABA Therapy consist of:
- Fostering Independence
- Teaching Functional Communication
- Increasing Self-Awareness
- Improving Social Skills
- Individualized Learning
- Building Confidence and Advocacy
